St Regis Hotel Sunset Tradition

Work/life balance is something that is talked about a lot. For whatever reason, at least in our culture, when people are out of balance it is usually too much work, and not enough family time. It seems rarer to hear people say that someone spent too much time with family and not enough at work. It usually the opposite, where whenever there is a choice, it is that work needs to be done to get ahead.

Laura and I accidentally ran into a tradition years ago while vacationing in Park City. We were walking around and checking out Deer Valley and we decided to take the funicular up to the St. Regis Hotel overlooking the base of the Deer Valley Ski Resort. We wondered around the hotel, and we ended up in the bar for the views, food and an Apero. As sunset was approaching, we were invited out on the deck to watch the sunset and to participate in their nightly sunset tradition.

The Sunset Champagne Ritual at St. Regis celebrates the sunset each day in style with a Champagne sabering. The saberer first gives a brief overview of the ritual’s history, a ritual that dates to John Jacob Astor’s 1904 founding of the St. Regis New York. This happens at every St. Regis hotel around the world!   I’m not sure if they always talk about the why behind the tradition, or if it is the same in the St. Regis Hotels around the world.  When we were there, the saberer spoke that the sunset sabering ceremony was the time to transition from the working day to the evening which is time to release the workday and to embrace time with family and friends.  I loved it!  What an awesome tradition!

Opening a champagne bottle with a saber dates back to Napoleon, the art of using a Champagne saber is one of the most theatrical ways to serve sparkling wine. The experience is an unforgettable nightly tradition at the St. Regis!  The nightly St. Regis Champagne Ritual is a signal the day has ended, and night has started, and time with family and friends has begun.

This was a QTR experience, and I think of it often at sunset, whether or not I have a glass of champagne or other adult beverage.
